aka Customized Fuels, Consumption, and Smoke Modeling Tool

BlueSky Playground ExampleAvailable Output

The output available through the BlueSky Playground is numerous:

  • fuel loadings
  • fire consumption
  • fire emissions
  • plume rise
  • predicted PM2.5 ground concentrations

Both 48-hr forecast and hindcast modeling is available, through an expanding archive of meteorology.

General Discussion

  • The BlueSky Playground is an interactive modeling tool that allows the user to run models and visualize the results through their web-browser.
  • The models are run on larger servers remotely, with the results passed back to the browser;  therefore real computing power is needed on the user side.
  • The user inputs their fire information (location, size), and then has access to the variety of models available through the BlueSky Modeling Framework, including:
      • Fuel loadings from FCCS, Hardy, and NFDRS.
      • Consumption from CONSUME3 and FEPS
      • Time rate of consumption from WRAP Wildfire Profile and FEPS Prescribed Fire Profile
      • Speciated emissions from FEPS
      • Plume rise from FEPS
      • Smoke concentrations from HYSPLIT Dispersion model.
  • Additional models are being added.  In particular, prescribed burn calculations for pile and broadcast burns are being examined for inclusion.

How to use

  • Users can explore the results of various model choices, and where available, input their own information (e.g. for fuel loading) before proceeding to the next step.
  • Output reports are available (Note:  user feedback is being sought on how best to format these reports).
  • Users can set up their own account or use the Guest account (preloaded when you arrive at the site).

Navigating the product

  • Because of the extensive controls and options available, a detailed walkthrough of the Playground has been created as a separate document.
NOTE:  Because the Playground is undergoing development in response to user requests, minor differences may exist between the walkthrough and the current Playground layout.  Please report any major discrepancies to wfdss.aq@gmail.com.
